The head of the Croatian primary school teachers' union, Sanja Sprem, said on Tuesday that the government's offer made during negotiations on a new Basic Collective Agreement was unacceptable.

Sprem, as well as Matija Kroflin of the Independent Trade Union of Employees in Science and Higher Education, said that it was unjustified for the government not to raise base pay for public-sector employees.

They insisted that the positive economic indicators such as Croatia’s fast recovery from the corona crisis could not justify the government’s refusal to increase base pay.

The leader of the Secondary School Employees’ Union, Nada Lovric, said they were negatively surprised by the government’s offer and that they had expected “a serious proposal” for negotiations set for next Tuesday.
