Slovenia on Tuesday confirmed a record number of 181 coronavirus cases in a single day this summer, with every tenth test returning positive, the largest proportion in the past two and a half months.

Of 1,773 PCR tests done in the last 24 hours, 181 returned positive, which is a test positivity rate of 10.2 percent, the government said on Tuesday.

The number of active cases currently stands at 1,195, and 30 COVID patients are being treated in hospitals, of whom nine are in intensive care.

There have been no COVID-related deaths in the last 24 hours and the country’s death toll remains at 4,429.

The 14-day incidence rate has increased to 56.7 per 100,000 population, while the 7-day average of infections confirmed in a single day is 101. Local media say that if this trend continued, Slovenia might soon leave the green zone and turn orange on the COVID map.

Prime Minister Janez Jansa has appealed to the public to get vaccinated. “The present vaccination rate is too low if we are to successfully stop the more contagious delta variant. There is enough vaccine, and mobile vaccination teams are also in place. Let’s get vaccinated to ensure a normal life in the autumn,” he said.

According to official figures, 38.5 percent of the population have been fully inoculated against COVID-19. Epidemiologists and the government say that this number should be increased considerably by the autumn and that the vaccination rate for the elderly population should be more than 90 percent.
