Serbia's Covid-19 death toll to date surpassed 6,000, with one of the latest a nine-day-old baby.

In the past 24 hours, there have been 35 deaths, putting the death toll at 6,026, while 12,482 tests have confirmed 2,604 new infections.

Epidemiological data show a gradual decrease in the number of hospitalized patients and for the first time since the end of March their number has dropped below 7,000, to 6,701, including 217 on ventilators.

Commenting on the death of the nine-day-old baby, immunologist Srdja Jankovic, a member of Serbia’s Covid-19 response team, expressed concern about the increasing numbers of hospitalized children, adding that there are two possible explanations for that – that the virus is mutating, and also that it’s finding its way to people with a weak immune system.

He added that although the number of infected children is still “relatively low” he urged caution.

Serbia today received a new shipment of 211,770 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, and Prime Minister, Ana Brnabic, said an additional 130,000 doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine are expected to arrive by the end of the day or on Tuesday.
