After spending the night in custody for threatening a neighbour, the president of SDP's Dubrovnik branch, Jadran Barac, on Sunday tendered his irrevocable resignation as the leader of the party's Dubrovnik branch and said that he was withdrawing from the race for Dubrovnik mayor.

In a press release, Barac admitted that he had reacted in an extremely inappropriate way in the conflict on Saturday which was a result of “long-standing family disagreements, full of harassment, insults and even threats from close people”.

“I turned myself in to the police and confessed to what I was accused of. Taking into account the seriousness of the situation and me being a public figure, and I believe that public figures should be an example to everyone else in the society, I hereby announce my withdrawal from the race for Dubrovnik mayor and irrevocably resign as president of SDP Dubrovnik. I am sorry about what happened. My family comes first, so I wouldn’t like to talk about this subject any further, which is why I ask you for understanding,” Barac said.

Barac was charged with making threats, which is punishable with up to three years in prison.
