Buildings in areas struck by the 29 December earthquake will be re-examined due to the aftershocks which may have additionally damaged them, the head of the task force dealing with the aftermath of the quake, Tomo Medved, said at a cabinet meeting on Thursday.

The Croatian Earthquake Engineering Centre has completed the initial quick inspection of 38,239 damaged buildings, giving 4,642 the red label, 8,254 the yellow and 25,343 the green label, Medved said.

Buildings which pose a threat to people’s safety are being demolished, with 563 reported and 37 demolished to date in Petrinja, Glina, and Sisak, he added. The State Inspectorate has conducted a tender for hiring additional companies to demolish such buildings.

Medved said 6,961 applications for reconstruction had been received. The contracting of reconstruction works will begin on 20 April and about 2,000 buildings will be included as of 1 June, he added.

Temporary accommodation is still being provided for the people affected, with 1,844 housing containers and mobile homes set up to date, Medved said, adding that 146 containers were ready to be set up in Petrinja and Sisak.

This week 13 tonnes of food, 23,000 meals and 4,775 litres of water have been given to the affected population. Medved announced that in future local restaurants would prepare the food and that the state would cover the expenses.
