The foreign ministry of Montenegro said on Friday that they ordered an unnamed Russian diplomat to leave the country.

A press release sent by the ministry to media outlets said that the government’s note had been handed to Russia’s ambassador to Montenegro, Vladislav Vladislavovich Maslennikov, giving the unnamed diplomat a 72-hour deadline to leave the country.

“This decision was taken after Montenegro security agencies had assessed that the Russian diplomat’s activities were not compatible with the Vienna Convention,” the note said, referring to a 1961 international treaty on diplomatic relations.

Montenegro, an Adriatic nation of 620,000 people, is a member of Nato since 2017, and is hoping to join the European Union following the conclusion of accession negotiations which formally began in 2012.

On Tuesday, Montenegro moved to join EU sanctions against Russia over its invasion on Ukraine. The country’s government also sent a shipment of bulletproof vests and helmets along with a €50,000 donation to Ukraine.
