Economy and Sustainable Development Minister Tomislav Coric said on Wednesday that Croatia supports the target of reducing CO2 emissions and Europe's aim to be climate neutral by 2050, adding that Croatia is working intensively on decarbonising its energy sector and the entire economy.

Coric participated in an informal meeting of energy ministers and a high-level meeting of the Central and South Eastern Europe Energy Connectivity (CESEC) initiative in Slovenia, the ministry said in a press release.

The EU ministers discussed the  Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Directives.

In July 2021, the European Commission presented the Fit for 55 package, a set of proposals to revise and update EU legislation with the aim of ensuring climate neutrality by 2050.

According to Coric, the package will ensure additional resilience and sustainability of Croatia’s economy. Croatia supports increasing the objective of reducing CO2 emissions and Croatia is working intensively on decarbonising its energy sector and the entire economy, said Coric.

“Currently about 60% of electricity generated in Croatia comes from renewable sources and the objective is to additionally stimulate strengthening the production of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. That will reduce CO2 emissions in the energy sector and also increase production and ensure sufficient quantities of electricity for our own use,” said Minister Coric.

On Tuesday Coric participated in a high-level meeting of the Central and South Eastern Europe Energy Connectivity (CESEC) initiative. The main topics discussed were achievements and future priorities for the electrical and gas energy sectors.
