A strong earthquake hit the Croatian region of Dalmatia, as well as parts of southwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina, at around 10 pm on Wednesday.

First reports by the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) estimated the earthquake measured 5.1 on the Richter scale, but seismologist Ines Ivancic confirmed for N1 the tremor had the magnitude of 4.6.

According to EMSC, the epicentre of the quake was near the mountain of Kamesnica on the Croatian border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, some 40 kilometres northeast of the Adriatic city of Split.

So far, there have been no reports of serious damage, according to N1’s reporter Hari Kocic.

The shaking could be felt in the Dalmatian towns of Sibenik and Makarska and the Adriatic islands of Hvar and Ciovo, as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
