Independent volunteers helping in the earthquake-struck parts of Sisak-Moslavina County said on Thursday that many affected households still did not have water supply and drainage, calling on the earthquake task force and the government to present a concrete plan.

“The problem is that the basic living conditions have not been ensured for the local population. Today in Croatia, in the 21st century, people have no water. Today, 79 days since the earthquake, the local population has not been provided with targeted and full distribution of drinking and service water for maintaining hygiene and sanitary standards,” said Martina Pavicic, a representative of the Independent Volunteers initiative.

She told the press the initiative was supported by many associations, platforms and other initiatives, and that it had over 100 highly experienced people on the ground and cooperated with the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations.

“According to official Sisak-Moslavina County data, only 90 of the 453 villages and settlements have partial or full water supply. In the other 363 villages, people used water from wells even before the earthquake. Since the earthquake, the wells are muddy. The quality of the water has not been examined in all settlements and villages. A systematic solution doesn’t exist, 79 since the earthquake,” said Pavicic.

Glina Deputy Mayor Branka Baksic-Mitic said 634 buildings in the city had still not been examined by structural engineers.

“Fifty-seven families are without a (housing) container, living in houses which could fall on their heads any day. The lucky ones who have been given containers, about 80 percent are not connected to drainage and water supply. These are big problems. These people are mainly elderly and cannot do that by themselves,” she said.

She said many water tanks and plastic septic tanks were needed.
