PM Andrej Plenkovic and members of the Croatian Bishops' Conference (HBK) Permanent Council on Monday called on citizens and the faithful to contribute to overcoming the health crisis, primarily by getting vaccinated and behaving responsibly and complying with epidemiological restrictions.

“Our care for man and wish to benefit the society we live in make us call on all citizens, the faithful and all people of good will to contribute to the health and social crisis we have been witnessing, primarily through vaccination as a means of preventing and stopping the transmission of the virus, as well as through responsible behavior and care for our own and our dear ones’ health, and through compliance with calls made on a daily basis by medical professionals and epidemiological rules designed to protect human lives and health,” the government and the HBK said in a joint statement.

Similarly, one should also accept the obligation of testing for those who have not been vaccinated or recovered from Covid-19, as well as the appropriateness of Covid-19 certificates as a means to reduce the risk of infection and transmission.

“Only by combining the available measures, which individually are not sufficient, can we prevent the spreading of the epidemic more efficiently,” the statement said.

Demography, restitution and restoration of Church property

The two sides expressed satisfaction with relations between the government and the Catholic Church as well as with an agreed proposal for an implementing agreement on Caritas to regulate cooperation in the field of charity work.

They also discussed demography, with bishops welcoming the government’s efforts in that regard and expressing interest in cooperation with the government and the Central State Office for Demography and Youth.

Also discussed was the restitution of church property and agreement was reached to analyze court practice in the context of laws and agreements between the Holy See and Croatia and possibly amend the legislative framework to help deal with problems regarding procedures to prove the legal succession of Church legal entities.

Also discussed were funds secured to restore religious buildings, and a conclusion was made to continue cooperating in the process of their restoration.
