French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said in Strasbourg on Tuesday the political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina was worrying and that France condemned the institutional blockade in that country.

“The completion of the electoral and constitutional reform before the set deadline could guarantee the legitimate representation of all components of Bosnia and Herzegovina. We will pay great attention to this issue because it’s important,” he said at a European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs meeting, responding to a question from Croatian MEP Zeljana Zovko.

Le Drian said the French EU presidency, which lasts until 30 June, planned to be active in the promotion of dialogue for the purpose of defusing tensions, Zovko’s office said in a press release.

In her address, Zovko underlined the French contribution to the negotiations on the Dayton peace agreement, which ended the war in BiH, saying that 26 years later it was being ignored. “Despite all French and Croatian efforts in the region, things are not as they should be.”

Le Drian said the EU was interested in the Western Balkans and that he was expecting an EU summit on the region planned to be held during the French EU presidency.

He underlined the importance of ensuring a clear and unambiguous future for the states in the region based on the accession methodology adopted two years ago, Zovko’s office said.
