Croatia is now at the peak of the third wave of the pandemic, but if Croatians complied with the coronavirus restriction, the numbers are expected to start falling, Head of Croatia's Public Health Institute and the country's coronavirus czar, Krunoslav Capak, told reporters on Wednesday.

He said the highest numbers of new cases was generally recorded on Wednesdays and Thursdays because that’s when “the largest number of people get tested.”

“The share of positive tests tells us that the epidemic is still ongoing, but we should comply with the measures and the situation will start letting up,” Capak said.

Capak said “larger quantities” of coronavirus vaccines are expected to arrive in May and June, adding that it is now necessary “to prepare well.”

He also commented on the European Medicines Agency’s opinion on Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine, which, like in AstraZeneca case, said that although using that particular vaccine may lead to blood clots in some very rare cases, its usage greatly outweighs the risks.

Capak said that although Croatia had received 7,150 doses of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine, its authorities have not administered any yet.

“After EMA’s opinion, we are waiting for their (official) response. When the necessary papers arrive, we’ll start with vaccination.”
