In the last 24 hours, 3,763 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Slovenia, with 49.2% of the tests coming back positive. Five people have died of COVID-19 since Monday.

There are 1,074 hospitalised COVID patients, including 229 in intensive care, according to the Health Ministry.

A poll conducted by the Ljubljana Dnevnik daily shows that 60 percent of respondents would support restrictions against those who have not been vaccinated or recovered from COVID, while only 20 percent would be in favour of a lockdown for all.

A lockdown only for the unvaccinated would make little sense as it would cause even bigger public resistance than there is now, although it might increase interest in vaccination, said chief infectious disease specialist Bojana Beovic, who called for adopting balanced measures that would be applied.

Epidemiologist Mateja Logar, who heads the government’s COVID team, said more solidarity was needed in society for the situation to improve.

“The current epidemiological situation in Slovenia is a reflection of extreme egotism. We find the measures good as long as we don’t have to comply and implement them,” she tweeted, adding, “there is no more time and we must all contribute if we want the situation to improve, schools to stay open, and the health system not to collapse.”
