The epidemiological situation in Slovenia is deteriorating as the seven-day average of daily cases has risen to 938, with 24.6 percent of all tests coming positive and revealing an increase in more contagious variants, the country's Health Ministry reported on Friday.

In the past 24 hours, 1,279 new coronavirus infections were confirmed out of nearly 5,200 tests conducted. Three patients have died, bringing the total death toll in the country to 4,100.

There are 13,911 active cases, including 618 hospitalised patients, 139 of whom are in intensive care.

An 11-day nationwide lockdown ends on Monday, and the government will decide over the weekend which restrictions will remain in place.

Slovenia has vaccinated over 300,000 people to date, 15 percent of its population. Some 120,000 people have received both doses of the vaccine.

Slovenia has administered 177,143 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine and it is now given to people aged 60-65, while those older or with chronic conditions are to receive Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

The government aims to vaccinate half the population by the middle of the year.
