The new leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Pedja Grbin, on Tuesday did not receive support for his proposed changes in the positions that SDP parliamentarians hold in the national legislature.

Upon the first session of the presidency of this Opposition party since he became its fourth leader last Saturday, Grbin told the press that he would also take over the helm of the SDP caucus in the parliament and explained that he would not reveal any other changes before his meeting with all the members of the caucus.

However, today’s meeting of the caucus resulted in a complicated situation, according to unofficial reports.

A majority of SDP members of parliament turned down the package of changes proposed by the new chief.

The replacement of SDP parliamentarian Niksa Vukas from the chairmanship of the parliamentary National Security Committee seemed to have elicited the biggest resistance from other SDP MPs.

Grbin was in favour of Sinisa Hajdas Doncic replacing Vukas.

Grbin has proposed that Sabina Glasovac should fill the position of the parliament’s deputy speaker allotted for the Opposition, that is the SDP, after Rajko Ostojic suspended his term in the parliament.

The SDP caucus will resume the meeting on Wednesday, and after today’s meeting Grbin criticised his predecessor Davor Bernardic for having obstructed the motions on today’s agenda.

Grbin has in the meantime demanded that Zeljko Sabo, who was elected to the party’s presidency with the support of about 3,000 members, should suspend his party membership given that he had served a prison sentence for political corruption.
