In May 2020, the average monthly net salary in Croatia amounted to 6,655 kuna (€883), or 0.4% up month-on-month and 1.1 percent up year-on-year, the state statistics bureau said on Monday.

This was the first increase of average salary in real pay increase in three months, after the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdowns associated with it had prevented salary growth for several months.

In mid-March, Croatia imposed a lockdown, followed by a government package of measures to help the economy, including a job-retention measure of 3,250 kuna (€431) net for the March pay and 4,000 kuna (€531) net for April and May each.

According to the Croatian Employment Service, the job-retention amount for May was paid out for 443,839 workers.

Median net earnings for May 2020 amounted to 5,579 (€740), while median gross earnings amounted to 7,225 (€960).

For May 2020, the average monthly gross pay amounted to HRK 9,067 (€1,204), which represented a nominal increase of 0.1 percent, while in real terms it remained the same, as compared to April 2020. Year-on-year, the average gross pay was 0.2 percent higher in nominal terms and 0.8 percent in real terms.

In May 2020, there were 167 paid hours on average, which means they decreased by 4 percent compared to April 2020.
