The Constitutional Court on Thursday appointed an ethics commission to monitor electioneering for the July 5 parliamentary election, with academician and Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) president Velimir Neidhardt at its helm.

The ruling majority in the 9th parliament nominated Zagreb university professors Davor Derencinovic and Dubravka Hrabar as well as associate professor Zlatko Erjavec from Vinica as members of the Ethics Commission.

Opposition parties nominated Rijeka university professor Sanja Baric and professors Djordje Gardasevic and Stanko Bruno Ursic from Zagreb.

The Ethics Commission is a supra-party body comprising reputable citizens who are not members of any political party and it promotes ethical and democratic principles at elections through statements and warnings.

The Commission evaluates conduct during electioneering and the election process itself.

Its members are appointed by the Constitutional Court at the recommendation of parliamentary parties.
