Bosnian, Serbian police disable group suspected of migrant smuggling

One person was arrested on Monday in the eastern Bosnia within a joint police operation of Bosnia's and Serbia's law enforcement agencies under suspicion of illegal migrant smuggling, the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina said Monday.

The operation codenamed ‘Kajak’ is being carried out by Bosnia’s Prosecution and the State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA), in cooperation with Serbian Interior Ministry and Prosecutor’s Office for Organised Crime.

The person who was apprehended in the area of the eastern town of Bratunac, near the border with Serbia, is suspected of being part of a group dealing with illegal smuggling and transportation of migrants from Serbia to Bosnia, for their further journey to the European Union countries.

The international operation was supported by the Southeast European Law Enforcement Centre (SELEC), and it involved the cooperation of Bosnia’s and Serbia’s law enforcement agencies.
