The town of Velika Gorica, some 16 kilometres south of capital Zagreb, signed a partnership agreement on Friday with the Chinese company Z-Run WellTon Industry to build a new football stadium and a sports camp, in a major project estimated to be worth €150 million.

Municipal authority of Velika Gorica said on their website that the purpose of the agreement signed on Friday is to “define a framework for signatories to the agreement in the area of sports infrastructure” in Velika Gorica and the region around the capital Zagreb.

“The City of Velika Gorica presented investment opportunities in sports infrastructure, which includes a stadium with adjoining facilities… The Chinese delegation visited the plot of land which the stadium would be built on, and as a result, we formally signed the agreement today,” Mayor of Velika Gorica, Drazen Barisic, said.

Along with Barisic, the agreement was signed by the president of the local NK Gorica football club, Nenad Crnko, and the founder of Z-Run, Jiang Yu.

According to local media reports, the new stadium should have a capacity between 30,000 to 35,000 seats – making it one of the largest stadiums in the country – and would look similar to the similar-sized Astana Arena in Kazakhstan.

“We know Croatian football fans expect more quality in the local sports infrastructure, especially the stadiums, and we are excited that we can be part of this important project,” Yu said.

This is the second major sports venue project recently agreed with Chinese companies in Croatia. Last week, president of HNK Rijeka, Damir Miskovic, signed a memorandum of understanding with Top International Engineering Corporation (TIEC) based in Xi’an, to build a new stadium in the northern Adriatic city of Rijeka.
