Around 185 kilograms of marijuana soaked in sea water was found over the last three days in the waters off the Adriatic islands of Hvar and Vis, police reported on Tuesday (March 20).

Authorities have launched an investigation into where the packages came from and who the drug smugglers might be. The first packages were found floating south of Hvar on Tuesday morning. Unconfirmed reports say the packages, taped and wrapped in plastic, were spotted from the shore by a policeman who immediately notified his colleagues.

A similar thing happened on Friday when a man spotted two packages floating in a cove on the south side of Vis island. They were extracted by the police and determined to contain 25 kilograms of marijuana.

Local police launched an investigation, and the state attorney office has been notified. Earlier this month, marijuana was also found in the waters in the southern Adriatic around the city of Dubrovnik , with similar packages totalling 270 kilograms found floating off the islands of Lastovo, Korčula, Mljet and Lokrum.
