The landslide which destroyed seven homes in the town of Hrvatska Kostajnica in central Croatia was still reportedly active on Wednesday (March 14).

Residential areas are still under threat from rising river levels in Kostajnica, but also in the area around the city of Sisak.

In Kostajnica a landslide destroyed parts of a nearby hill on Wednesday, taking seven houses with it within seconds. Although people reportedly jumped through windows and balconies to escape the landslide, there were no reported injuries, and 23 locals were later evacuated to a nearby hotel. Red Cross has set up a helpline for donations.

A spell of warm weather earlier this month caused snow to melt, rising river levels and threatening residential areas in several parts of the country, including areas near the cities of Sisak and Karlovac. Two hundred soldiers were dispatched by the defence ministry earlier this week to help residents fight flooding and build sand bag dykes in the most affected areas. According to latest reports, the situation in Kostajnica is stable, but the Sava river level near Sisak is expected to continue rising in the coming days.
