The opposition's initiative to dissolve the Parliament will not be successful, said the Croatian Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic, on Wednesday in Sofia, where he is to attend the EU-Western Balkans summit.

The largest opposition party, the centre-left Socialist Democratic Party (SDP), called this week for the dissolution of Parliament and an early election, following a scandal with leaked e-mails that revealed that the Economy Minister consulted private firms and brokerages in drafting the law on government appointed crisis management, Lex Agrokor. The scandal resulted in the resignation of the Deputy Prime Minister, and Economy Minister, Martina Dalic, on Monday.

“The chaos caused by Plenkovic's government is evident. The country is overrun by nepotism, corruption, crime, and the hatred for ethnic, religious and other minorities. Because of all this, SDP is demanding that the Parliament be dissolved, and early election called,” said the leader of SDP, Davor Bernardic, on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister said that the initiative is doomed to failure.

“What is important, I repeat once more, is that we have done everything we could on such short notice, we reached out to experts who could contribute (to drafting of the law). Everything we did was done with the goal of saving the Croatian economy and our finance system,” said Plenkovic.

The Prime Minister denied that he knew of some legal experts’ suggestions that some provisions of the law would be unconstitutional.

“That does not matter in the end. What does matter, is the Constitutional Court’s ruling that the final version of the law was in line with the Constitution, and that is the most important thing,” he added.
